📈 Enterprises To Increase AI Spending Next Year
Every enterprise is upping the ante on AI. According to a global survey by MIT Technology Review's Insights group, all executives from 600 companies are planning to dial up their spending on AI and modernizing data infrastructure. C-level officers from diverse industries reveal an optimistic outlook, with 81% of respondents predicting a minimum 25% efficiency boost in their sectors due to AI in the next two years. A third of these leaders foresee a staggering 50% gain.
Concurrently, there's a mutual focus on revenue generation and cost reduction. While 70% respondents deem it crucial for AI projects to trim costs, an equal percentage believes AI should facilitate new revenue streams. Companies are not just preparing for a storm, they are ready to chart new courses. Notably, almost half of the surveyed firms plan to hike their spending on data infrastructure and AI by a hefty 25% or more. zdnet

🤝 How You Can Contribute to Making AI Safer
5 years ago, AI was already performing many tasks from running job interviews to making welfare decisions. Now, it’s writing business strategies, assisting doctors, drafting legal documents, and so much more.
However, researchers still don’t know exactly how AI works (including when they make mistakes), nor do politicians now how to ensure it is used responsibly so its benefits are distributed to society. We as a global society could get AI wrong in many ways. For example, it could concentrate wealth into the hands of a few through mass job automation, break democracies by flooding politician’s emails with fake letters, and impede the legal system by faking video and photographic evidence that no one can detect.
The good news is that an emerging group of organisations are working hard to solve these problems through technical research, political work and public education.
Supporting their work could be highly impactful, leading to breakthroughs that help us develop safe A and govern it responsibly for the benefit of everyone it affects.
We at The Intelligence Age think Giving What We Can is doing great work to identify the best organisations to support, which you can see and donate to on their site.

🤖 Practical AI: Securing an AI Partner for your Business
Identifying the right AI partner for your business goes beyond mere selection, it's a blend of strategic alignment, flexibility, and openness to experimentation. Here are three perspectives on how to go about it:
Carter Cousineau of Thomson Reuters advises professionals to clearly define their business case for AI and ensure data governance is prioritized. "My first question to many professionals is, 'do you need a large language model?'" she says.
Tulia Plumettaz of Wayfair underscores the value of flexibility, detailing how Wayfair's integrated relationship with Snorkel allows them to explore potential AI use cases without being locked into one approach.
Lalo Luna from Heineken emphasizes the importance of staying open to experimentation. He mentions, "Success is all about jumping to the experimentation phase."
A combination of embracing AI advancements and focusing on upskilling their people and building technological ecosystems is key to making better decisions and gaining a competitive edge. zdnet

Clevrer-Humans: Describing Physical And Causal Events The Human Way
Jiayuan Mao et al.
∑ Summary: The CLEVRER-Humans benchmark is introduced to address the lack of diversity and human-like judgement in existing physical and causal reasoning benchmarks, using novel data collection techniques and posing significant challenges for question-answering approaches.
!? Practical implications: The development of the CLEVRER-Humans benchmark could lead to advancements in artificial intelligence that better understand and interact with the physical world, potentially revolutionizing industries such as robotics, autonomous vehicles, and virtual reality by enabling more nuanced and human-like responses to real-world events.
